Liverpool are poised to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle on transfer deadline day after agreeing a Premier League record £125million fee for the wantaway striker
Liverpool are set to end the transfer saga of the summer after agreeing a fee with Newcastle to sign Alexander Isak.
The Reds have been keen on the Sweden international all summer, but saw an initial £110million bid rejected at the start of August. Isak has gone on strike and publicly accused Newcastle of breaking promises of a transfer – and finally he will get his way.
The 25-year-old is due to have a medical on Monday after Liverpool agreed to pay Newcastle £125m for his services, although the deal is worth £130m to the selling club due to solidarity payments. He will sign a six-year contract on Merseyside and become the most expensive player in Premier League history, eclipsing his new team-mate Florian Wirtz, who cost a combined £116m from Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer.
Newcastle have been insistent that Isak is not for sale at any price this summer, with Eddie Howe suggesting he could still be reintegrated into the team. But the £70m signing of Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart on Saturday eased the pressure and opened the door to a deal that Liverpool believed was always on the table.

The Magpies have been chasing the signings of two strikers this summer, having lost Isak to self-imposed exile and Callum Wilson on a free transfer to West Ham. They remain in pursuit of a second forward, having so far unsuccessfully tried to prise Yoane Wissa away from Brentford and had bids rejected by Wolves for Jorgen Strand Larsen.
Isak had been valued at £150m by Newcastle, but with the clock ticking towards Monday’s 7pm deadline, a compromise has been found. Liverpool have spent over £300m to sign Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giovanni Leoni, Armin Pesci and Freddie Woodman this summer, but always had extra funds available for Isak.
His decision to burn his bridges with Newcastle by releasing an inflammatory statement played into Liverpool’s hands, making it seem unlikely that he could rejoin Howe’s squad.
„When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue,“ Isak wrote on August 19. „That’s where things are for me right now and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.”
Newcastle responded with a statement of their own, which hinted that he was for sale at the right price. It read: “As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. We do not foresee those conditions being met.”
Those conditions have now been met and, barring any unforeseen complications on deadline day, Isak will become a Liverpool player. He 27 goals in 42 appearances for Newcastle last season and will leave with a record of 62 goals in 109 games altogether following his £63m move from Real Sociedad in 2022.
