Gareth Southgate has been out of football management since leaving his role as England manager in July 2024 but is set to move into a different role in due course
Former England manager Gareth Southgate is set to take on a new role with the BBC. The 54-year-old has yet to return to management since stepping down as Three Lions boss in 2024, but is poised to step into a broadcasting role.
It has been all change at the BBC over the summer, with Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan taking over from Gary Lineker on flagship football show Match of the Day. And the latest Beeb update marks Southgate’s first foray into hosting.
According to The Sun, the 54-year-old will earn around £50,000 as the presenter of new show ‚One of a Kind‘. The report indicates Southgate is due to interview successful leaders and winners from industry as part of the role, citing insiders who claim the Beeb see his arrival as „a real coup“.
Southgate has been out of the management game since England’s defeat in the Euro 2024 final. He confrmed his departure from the national team job shortly after Mikel Oyarzabal’s late Spain winner broke English hearts.
He has been linked with a return to the dugout, with Manchester United touted as a potential destination before the club moved for Ruben Amorim. Earlier this month, though, Southgate insisted he was in no rush to take his next steps in management.

„I’m enjoying my life. I’m enjoying a different pace of life,“ he told The Sun at August’s PFA Awards ceremony. „I’m busy I’ve got a book that I’m finishing writing on leadership.“
Addressing a managerial return, he added: „I’ve no idea. It’s not something I’m actively seeking at the moment. But when I left Middlesbrough 15 years ago I wasn’t looking then either and something came along and I ended up where I ended up.“
Having opted against bringing Southgate to Old Trafford, United have struggled under Amorim. The Portuguese coach cast doube on his own future after a humbling Carabao Cup defeat at the hands of Grimsby Town, though his team responded by beating Burnley to claim a first Premier League win of the new season.
“Sometimes I hate my players, sometimes I love my players, sometimes I want to defend my players,” Amorim said after the Grimsby defeat. “Sometimes I want to quit Sometimes I want o be here for 20 years, sometimes I love my players sometimes I don’t want to be here with them.
“This is my way of doing things and I’m going to be like that. I was frustrated and annoyed. I know you have a lot of experienced players saying I should be more calm. But I’m going to be who I am and in that moment I was really upset and disappointed.“
