Ex-Man Utd star axed by Ruben Amorim closing in on Premier League transfer

Manchester United allowed a number of players to leave during Ruben Amorim’s time in charge and one of them is close to finding himself a new club in the Premier League

Former Manchester United centre-back Victor Lindelof is on the verge of a Premier League return with Aston Villa. The Swedish defender left United when his contract expired at the end of June, and has been biding his time while waiting for his next move.

Lindelof joined United from Benfica when Jose Mourinho was manager and ended up spending eight years at Old Trafford before being let go by Ruben Amorim. He played nearly 300 games for the club, winning both domestic cups and making the squad for the Europa League final defeats in 2021 and 2025.

According to The Times, Lindelof is set to undergo a medical with Villa after spending the summer training in his homeland with Vasteras. That might not be the only deal involving Unai Emery’s side on deadline day.

Question marks remain over the future of Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez, who is a potential target for United. If the World Cup winner moves on then Emery would look to add a new senior keeper, with reports on the continent suggesting Porto’s Diogo Costa is one option.

Emery is also keen on a reunion with Marco Asensio. The Spanish forward impressed on loan from Paris Saint-Germain last season but returned to the French capital over the summer.

Villa have also been mentioned in connection with West Ham playmaker Lucas Paqueta. The Hammers don’t want to sell, though, and the Brazilian was named in the starting XI for their game away to Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon.

Emery’s side haven’t been the busiest in the window so far. Evann Guessand has been their highest-profile signing, joining from Nice for £26m, wile other new faces include Dutch duo Marco Bizot and Zepiqueno Redmond.

Lindelof’s former club United continued their wait for a clean sheet on Saturday. They did get a first win of the new campaign, though, with Bruno Fernandes scoring a last-minute winner in a topsy-turvy game against Burnley.

„It is three points, if you look at the game we should solve it in the first half and control the game – but we are fighting to the last minute because of things we overcomplicate,“ United boss Amorim said. „Look at the first half, we have so many chances to score.

„You feel you can control the game. But one throw-in, one set-piece. I shook my head, because sometimes football is like this. This was a game we had to win, but we have a lot to do.“
