Gender-row boxer Imane Khelif faces defeat in attempt to overturn ban

Imane Khelif has been handed a major blow after being informed she will be unable to compete in the World Boxing Championships

Algerian Olympic boxing champion Imane Khelif will NOT compete in the World Boxing Championships as the boxer will not have an appeal heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in time.

The competition is set to begin in Liverpool on Thursday and will continue until September 14. The 26-year-old Algerian boxer, who clinched the women’s welterweight title at the Olympic Games in Paris, faced controversy over her eligibility. Khelif submitted an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Monday over a ruling which prevents the boxer from fighting in the female category without a genetic sex test.

CAS released a list of hearings from September 2 until September 19 – with Khelif’s appeal not included. According to Sky Sports, an appeal could take several weeks and will therefore not be complete in time for the Algerian boxer to compete.

„Algerian boxer Imane Khelif has filed an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against World Boxing concerning a decision that disallows the athlete’s participation in upcoming World Boxing events without a preliminary genetic test,“ CAS confirmed on Monday.

Khelif won gold last summer having been cleared to compete by the International Olympic Committee, despite the International Boxing Association having banned her from the previous year’s World Championships for allegedly failing to meet their gender eligibility criteria.

Back in June, World Boxing apologised to Khelif after the 26-year-old was named in the governing body’s announcement of mandatory sex testing. A week prior to the apology, the governing body revealed that the Algerian boxer must undergo sex testing if she wishes to compete in any women’s event organised or sanctioned by World Boxing.

The initial announcement from the governing body – which will oversee boxing at the next Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028 – had included the publication of a letter sent to the Algerian Boxing Federation, explaining the requirement for Khelif to undergo sex screening to be able to compete at the Eindhoven Box Cup or any other women’s event under its authority.

All athletes over the age of 18 wishing to compete will be required to take one. Over the last year, Khelif has hit back at her critics and, after winning gold in Paris, she said: „I am fully qualified to take part in this competition – I am a woman. I was born a woman, I’ve lived as a woman and I’ve competed as a woman. There’s no doubt that there are enemies of success, and that gives my success a special taste because of these attacks.“

What boxing is on this week?

Michael Conlan is set to take on Jack Bateson in Dublin on Friday, September 5. Conlan will be returning for the first time since defeating Asad Asif Khan back in March. The main broadcast is set to get underway at around 9pm BST (4pm ET / 3pm CT / 1pm PT). Triller’s main show is due to get underway at around 7pm BST (2pm ET / 1pm CT / 11am PT).

A free preliminary undercard will begin on Triller at 5:15pm BST (12:15pm ET / 11:15am CT / 9:15am PT).
