No matter how much talent you have on your roster, top assistants are necessary for success in the National Football League.
That’s why the Detroit Lions might regress after their incredible season, as they lost both of their primary coordinators.
Aaron Glenn left town to be the head coach of the New York Jets, and Ben Johnson did the same with the Chicago Bears.
With that in mind, the Lions have finally announced their replacements, promoting Kelvin Sheppard to defensive coordinator and hiring John Morton to be their new offensive coordinator.
The Detroit Lions announced today the hiring of John Morton as offensive coordinator and the promotion of Kelvin Sheppard to defensive coordinator.

Morton, a Michigan native, had been a passing game assistant for the Denver Broncos.
Notably, he’s a familiar face, having worked under head coach Dan Campbell in 2022.
Morton started his NFL coaching career with the then-Oakland Raiders in 1998.
He later served in that same role for the New Orleans Saints.
Morton also has experience as an offensive coordinator for the University of Southern California and as a wide receivers coach with both the Saints and San Francisco 49ers.
He was also an offensive coordinator for the New York Jets at one point.
He worked under Coach Sean Payton for the past couple of years, and he now has big shoes to fill after Johnson’s departure, considering how innovative and creative Johnson was during his time leading that unit.
Fortunately for him, the Lions feature a myriad of talent to work with on offense.
