Inter Miami were hammered 3-0 by Seattle Sounders in the final of the Leagues Cup but Sunday’s match was marred by an incident involving Luis Suarez, who appeared to spit on a member of Seattle’s staff
North American football chiefs are probing an incident involving Luis Suarez after he appeared to SPIT on a Seattle Sounders staff member. Tempers flared after Seattle thrashed Suarez’s Inter Miami 3-0 in the Leagues Cup final on Sunday.
After the full-time whistle, the teams became embroiled in a melee of pushing and shoving. As the two sets of players and coaches began to disperse, Suarez was seen in a heated exchange Sounders director of security Gene Ramirez.
Footage shows the former Liverpool striker appearing to learn towards Ramirez and spit in his face. Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari stepped between Suarez, 38, and Ramirez to separate them.
The incident quickly gained traction on social media. A Leagues Cup spokesperson confirmed in a statement via ESPN: „The Leagues Cup Organizing Committee will review the incidents at the end of the game and proceed accordingly.“
During his press post-match conference, Seattle boss Brian Schmetzer didn’t wanna to discuss the incident and distract from his team’s performance and victory. Schmetzer also confirmed that he’d spoken to Miami captain Lionel Messi.

„Unfortunately, that is going to take some of the attention away from a great performance by the Seattle Sounders,“ the Sounders manager said. „Their players were frustrated and that led to some things happening on the field that shouldn’t happen on the field.
„I’m going to shut that down, because that shouldn’t be the story. The story of the game is not what happened after the game. I had a quiet moment with Messi on the field [after the game] and we talked and we tried to push it aside. That’s the story.“
Suarez has previously served lengthy bans for his bad behaviour. The ex-Barcelona forward was found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra during a Premier League match in 2011, resulting in the FA handing Suarez – who denied the allegation – an eight-game ban.
In April 2013, the Uruguayan was slapped with a 10-game suspension for his bite on Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic. Little over a year later, Suarez sunk his teeth into another defender, Giorgio Chiellini, during a World Cup clash with Italy.
FIFA banned him for the next nine international fixtures and from all football for four months. At the previous World Cup, Suarez infamously handled the ball on the line to stop Ghana from scoring the winning goal against Uruguay in their quarter-final matchup.
