Brazil overcame Chile 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in the Maracana on Friday, but were fortunate that Casemiro was not sent off at the end of the first half for a stamp
Manchester United midfielder Casemiro avoided a red card after standing on the leg of a stricken opponent while playing for Brazil. The Selecao enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 win over Chile in World Cup qualifying on Friday at the Maracana in a match that saw a nasty foul by Casemiro go unpunished.
Goals from Chelsea winger Estevao, West Ham playmaker Lucas Paqueta and Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes saw Carlo Ancelotti pick up his second win in his third game as Brazil boss. It was a chance for Ancelotti to experiment, with Brazil already assured of their place in next year’s World Cup, while Chile sat bottom of the group with their chance already gone.
Estevao put the home side in front by heading in a deflected shot from close range before Casemiro was fortunate not to be sent off on the stroke of half-time. The veteran midfielder clearly stood on the leg of Chile midfielder Felipe Loyola, who writhed around in pain on the floor.
The United star appeared to look down as he planted his foot, before looking up at the referee and apologising to his opponent. He was shown a yellow card, and with no VAR in operation, escaped any further punishment.

Ancelotti’s side made the game safe midway through the second half when Paqueta headed in Luiz Henrique’s cross at the back post. Guimaraes then grabbed a goal of his own by converting from on the goal line.
Brazil were already assured of their place at the 2026 World Cup, which takes place across Canada, the United States and Mexico. Ancelotti took over as manager this summer following the dismissal of Dorival Junior at the end of March.
The former Real Madrid manager is in his first role as an international boss and will be under huge pressure for results following a turbulent period. His arrival is good news for Casemiro, who played under the Italian coach during his successful period at Real.
Casemiro has 77 caps for the national team and is still a starter at Manchester United at the age of 33. He has started all three of United’s Premier League games this season in holding midfield, with Ruben Amorim not trusting Kobbie Mainoo or Manuel Ugarte in the position alongside captain Bruno Fernandes.
Asked what his ambitions were for the season, Casemiro told the United club website: “To have a great year. To have a great year at the top level, because at the end of the season we have the World Cup.
“So, I want to arrive at the World Cup in good form. I want to enjoy the year, to arrive in top form, and it is the title that I am missing. So, I want to win titles here. We have new signings of top quality that will help us a lot.”
