Manchester United were one of the busiest clubs in the summer transfer window, with Ruben Amorim overseeing a major overhaul of his squad at Old Trafford with a series of incomings and outgoings
Ex-Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has given his verdict on his old club’s summer transfer activity, rating it a solid eight out of 10. His high score for Ruben Amorim’s dealings during the window was largely due to the players that United managed to offload.
The notorious ‚bomb squad‘, including Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Marcus Rashford, have all departed Old Trafford this summer.
United also welcomed Belgian shot-stopper Senne Lammens to their squad on deadline day to take their total spend past £230m. The 23-year-old joins Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon as United’s fresh faces; however, Ferdinand stressed that selling was crucial to United’s success and claimed it will have had a positive impact on the dressing room.

On his show, Rio Ferdinand Presents, the former England centre-back said: „I’m going to give it [United’s transfer window] a 7.5, maybe an eight.
„I think I’ll give it an eight based on the players they’ve got out of the football club because they had the potential to affect the ambience if they were hanging around. I think it’s been a good decision from the club, good active work from the people behind the scenes.“
Garnacho sealed a permanent move to Chelsea for £40million, while Marcus Rashford joined Barcelona on a season-long loan earlier in the summer. Antony and Rasmus Hojlund moved to Real Betis and Napoli respectively, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Sancho has followed in Rashford’s footsteps by securing a season-long loan switch to Aston Villa, with Rashford having spent the second half of last campaign at Villa Park.
Villa have agreed to pay 80% of Sancho’s salary, though the arrangement includes achievable bonuses which should see his full wages covered during his stint in Birmingham. Sancho referenced Rashford when he was officially presented at Villa.
He said: „I spoke to him while he was here last season and I know he really enjoyed it. He said so many lovely things about the club, like how it’s a family and you feel that friendly environment with great players and staff. I definitely felt that as I came in.“
Kobbie Mainoo and Tyrell Malacia were also strongly linked with late summer window departures but will now remain at United for the present. The latter saw a loan move to Elche fall through, though could still be shifted with the transfer windows in Turkey and Saudi Arabia remaining open.
Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez was also seriously considered by United as a goalkeeping option, with the World Cup winner even omitted from Unai Emery’s squad to face Crystal Palace on Sunday evening.
Nevertheless, the club chose Lammens. A late bid for Atletico Madrid and England midfielder Conor Gallagher also failed to come to fruition for United. Amorim’s men have made a sluggish start to the season, but will take some consolation from Cunha’s bright performances and Mbeumo netting his first goal at the weekend.
