The Houston Rockets are currently trying to find their new identity and figure out who works and who doesn’t in the current lineup.

There are a lot of young players vying for time on the floor and some, like rookie Amen Thompson, could be the future of the team.

Marc J. Spears is reporting that the Rockets have assigned Thompson to their NBA G League affiliate team, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

So far this season, Thompson has averaged 6.3 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists while shooting 41% from the floor.

Thompson was the fourth pick in the latest draft and immediately generated a lot of interest from fans, who envision him as a tall, fast player who can both shoot well and defend the basket.

But his development was halted after just four games into the season when he suffered an ankle injury that kept him on the sidelines for multiple weeks.

His move to the G League means that he is getting much closer to coming back to the NBA.

He will use his time with the Vipers as a way to enhance his physicality, work on his shooting, shake off the rust, and be fully ready to join his team.

Plus, playing in the G League will give him a lot more time with the ball.

The Rockets are currently led by athletes like Fred VanVleet and Jalen Green, who both command the ball often.

Instead of sharing time with them, Thompson will be able to solely run plays and lead his G League team as he prepares for his re-entry to the Rockets.

Thompson won’t be the only Houston star spending time with the Vipers.

Cam Whitmore recently moved to the G League after failing to break out during his rookie year.

Will Rockets fans now get a chance to see these two shine?
