Rossa Ryan joined the 1,000 winner club on Tuesday when he reached the milestone with a victory at Goodwood.

The 25-year-old enjoyed a banner year in 2024 when he passed the 200 mark for the second year running in a campaign which climaxed with success in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Bluestocking and a Breeders’ Cup win on Starlust. He achieved those heights after bouncing back from losing his job as number one jockey to Kia Joorabchian’s Amo Racing in 2022 and then being elbowed off a horse by Christophe Soumillon during a race in France. Soumillion was given a 60-day ban.

Ryan, who has established himself as Ralph Beckett’s first choice jockey, rode his 116th winner of the year on the David Menuisier-trained two-year-old Lopeo who took him to 1,000 career winners worldwide by capturing the opening race at Goodwood. His total score in Britain stands at 982.

“It’s great to get,” he told RacingTV. “I’ve had a lot of good support from good people, a lot of character building and I think the biggest thing is I have a fantastic agent behind me. All the credit goes to him.

“I had an unbelievable grounding with Richard Hannon and that evolved into going to Amo and then that evolved onto Ralph. It’s been a good journey, so far, so good.”

Ryan has ridden the winners of nearly £3 million this year but has not yet registered a Group 1 success since winning at Del Mar in November last year.

“Most of the time I can leave the races at the races,” he continued. „This year’s been great but it wasn’t to the extent it was last year and I probably took last year for granted on everything Bluestocking did.

“It’s something I had to learn to adapt to and I am coping all right with it. I just have to keep my head down and keep going. You can have bad days and a bad run of things but the road will always turn and then you have to make the most of things.”
