Former Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been rushed to hospital in Naples after complaining of severe abdominal pain ahead of a Serie A match for AC Milan

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been rushed to hospital in Naples after experiencing severe abdominal pains before an AC Milan match.

Loftus-Cheek had been set to start for Milan against Naploli in Serie A on Sunday, but fell ill in the team hotel the night before.

Sky Sports Italy report that he will have his appendix removed, having been diagnosed with acute appendicitis.

Napoli host Milan at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona at 19:45 this evening.

The Englishman joined Milan from Chelsea in June 2023 for a fee of £18.5million. He has 10 goals and three assists in 62 matches for the Italian giants and has featured 22 times so far this season.

The 29-year-old was slated for a start, with midfielder Yunus Musah suspended, after training with Milan over the international break. He travelled with the team from the north of Italy to the south before noticing something was wrong.

He complained to the club’s medical staff about pain and was sent to the local hospital for tests, where appendicitis was diagnosed. The condition happens when the appendix becomes inflamed. It can be fatal, if left undetected and the appendix bursts.
